My own personal forum to rant and rave...

November 2, 2002
Here are some more pictures from the engagement party... from my camera (expertly handled by Khuzema Khairullah) and from Shaheda's.

3 weeks later, I sometimes still have a hard time believing that I got engaged...
October 23, 2002
A week and a half back, on October 12 at exactly 7:52 pm (don't ask!), amid much festivities, I got engaged to Mumtaz Bandukwala in Toronto. Although I am leaning towards the former right now, time will tell if this was the best or worst decision of my life! ;-)

Also realize - even though Mumtaz is Canadian, she's still cool.

Here are some pictures of the two of us a month back from New York. I am currently having technical difficulties with my digital camera, but here are Abizer's and Alefiya's pictures from the engagement ceremony. More pictures/links will be posted as they become available (for those of you that care... the rest of you, carry on).

My continuing tirade against hotmail...

While trying to troubleshoot a problem that someone was having with hotmail I came across this blurb in a message that microsoft sent to all hotmail users...

Keep your account size under the 2MB storage limit. Inboxes have a way of filling up fast, so please delete unwanted messages. If you go over the limit, the Hotmail Janitor will randomly delete messages until your account is back under the 2MB limit.

Unbelievable, they are advertising a service that will randomly delete your email... as a good thing... this is what I look for in an email provider.

Just cleaning out some of the junk that I acquired in New York and came across this flyer...
scary NY woman
I first saw this ad in the back of an airline magazine a couple of years back and it truly frightened me... This is definitively the scariest woman I have ever seen in an advertisement - I mean, is this the face that you want greeting you when travelling to a new city?? It is reasons like this, that people are scared of New Yorkers!

And just in case you are still wondering whether or not this woman is a serial killer or possessed by the devil, look at the phone number... 666...
September 11, 2002, a little later in the day...
JFK to SFO on Sept 11, 2002

I was one of the few people brave (foolish) enough to take a flight on the September 11 anniversary. Not only was the flight on September 11, but, it was a morning, cross-country flight that left New York city on United airlines. As you can see from the above picture, the plane was barely 20% full. There were lots of people wearing patriotic clothes as well as many FDNY t-shirts, though nobody went crazy (with their costume). The other group making a statement were quite a few jews in traditional garb.

Well, just got back from 2 weeks in New York City, probably one of the best trips I have ever taken... it was quite a crazy trip and we did some rather ridiculous things that most definitely changed my life... as I have nothing to complain about, I will save the details for another time and section... More later...

Obligatory rant: As expected, the transition to a new DSL provider (as described in the following entry) went poorly and that is why the site was down till now... for those of you that missed it...

Well, we are more than halfway through the year, this of course means that I am long overdue for yet another DSL provider/ISP change. My history thus far:

DSL Provider:
ISP:
 Northpoint
Flashcom
--->
(1)
 Northpoint
Telocity
--->
(2)
 Covad
Aplus
--->
(3)
Covad
 DSL.net

(1) December 2000 - Less than a year into my service with them, Flashcom was unable to pay its bills to Northpoint (and probably everyone else) and was forced to shut down. Considering I was only billed intermittently during my time with them, this is not surprising. I was transferred with minimal pain and minimal service outage.

(2) June 2001 - This was a big one. Verizon backed out of its deal to acquire the struggling Northpoint Communications. Northpoint promptly files for bankruptcy. AT&T acquired Northpoint's assets and decided that DSL was not part of its vision and cut off Northpoint's DSL customers. We were told that we would be automatically migrated to Rhythms DSL. In response, Rhythms promptly filed for bankruptcy. After about a month or two of no service and no hope for any, I signed up with APlus.net, apparently Covad's largest ISP.

(3) August 2002 - Enabling my fourth DSL Provider/ISP combination in three years, APlus.net has decided that it wants to concentrate more on web hosting and is jettisoning their DSL business. I am promised a seamless transition with minimal outage. I remain hopeful.

After being away from San Francisco for quite a while I was taking a long walk through the city now that I had a little bit of free time. I was greeted with a very sad depressing sight on O'Farrell street (between Van Ness and Polk): sad Kozmo offices

The offices for Kozmo.com, definitely one of the greatest dot-com services to go under, remain unoccupied, boarded-up and completely decrepit looking well over a year after they went under (April 12, 2001). What a sad statement on the dot-com bust and commercial real estate in San Francisco that prime real estate remains unused (I mean, really, who wouldn't want to work across the street from the Mitchell Brothers theater!).

The Olympic flame at night Hey all, well Olympic mania has hit Salim's World! I just got back from a week in the Salt Lake City where I saw a bunch of events and got some skiing in. This trip made me think about my previous trip to the Atlanta games, here are some thoughts and comparisons between the two... also, more pictures than you can shake a stick at...

Here are some of the more humorous and bizarre images from Salt Lake...

The great thing is, you can't fake stuff this strange...
Mormon protestors - 'Mormon Jesus is Devil's brother' and 'Mormons say Blacks are Cursed'Polygamy Porter - this is real beer, I'm not making this up!
